Bi_Focal #15: Where will the culture wars go next?

In this blog, we argue that the culture wars are likely to take on a new tenor as economic pressures - inflation, low growth, employment opportunities - return and fuse with cultural conflicts to give them a sharp, material edge. Over the course of this Bi_Focal series, we'll argue that these issues are - over and above views on race or conspiracy - deeply predictive of populist-right views across Western countries.

Bi_Focal #14: Labour's Green Challenge

This week we’re back in the UK looking at another one of the minority parties -- the Green Party -- and the challenge posed to Labour's left flank. We find that the Greens are attracting a number of those who voted Labour in 2019 - particularly left-wingers disillusioned by Starmer’s move to the centre. But among other groups, there’s much less movement, and the Green Party still has a lot of work to do.

Scatter plot depicting the landscape of Green Party subgroups, including Radical Red Greens, Green Populists, Urban Random Greens, Green Moderates, and Evergreen Optimists, across a left-right and anti-establishment to pro-establishment axis.

Bi_Focal #12: How Biden can still beat Trump

After Donald Trump’s succession of early primary victories, and Nikki Haley’s stinging loss in Nevada on Tuesday, a Biden-Trump rematch seems all but inevitable come November. The outcome of that contest, however, is far from certain.

Bi_Focal #11: What Explains Our Politics?

We look at how campaigning on social issues creates super-majorities in ways that on economic issues is more difficult. And we ask what polling on voting intention this far out implies for the next general election.
